Do you need fireproof paint?
If the floor components are built with carpenter I joists, fire-resistant paint is required when building new houses. Fire retardant coatings are part of IRC code R51.3. Due to their thin plywood webbing, when I-beams catch fire, they can lose their integrity at a dangerously rapid rate. By using chemical flame retardants, this speed can be slowed down, thereby providing more time for the evacuation of people in the house and giving emergency personnel more time to enter the building and extinguish the fire before the floor slab collapses. Not all municipalities have accepted new building codes at the same rate or ever. Please contact your local construction staff to find out the exact legal requirements in your area.
When is no need for fireproof paint?
In the following situations, you do not need to spray fireproof paint:
Existing house
Reconstruction project
Area less than 80 square feet, for example in machinery/utility rooms
Sprinkler system installed
The floor components (joists) are made of wood and have dimensions of 2×10, 2×12, etc.
For the finished basement ceiling, the bottom of the I-beam is finished/covered and has a thickness of ½ inch. Plaster or 5/8 inch. Plywood paneling
Check your native code for other exceptions
How to use fireproof paint?
Most paint is sprayed using a standard paint sprayer. The extension rod on the spray gun allows you to easily apply the product over long distances, and the rotating tip will help you enter narrow and hard-to-reach areas. The brush can be used and modified on smaller areas.
Usually, depending on your location, you can usually apply flame retardant paint yourself, but please contact your local construction official to ensure that you do not need to pass the certified installation procedure. Also, please note that some manufacturers themselves require you to be a certified installer, so please contact them too.
